Register with ACES (Access to Creative Education in Scotland) to join free events and to get support with your interest in art, design, and architecture.

Please read this page before completing the registration form to ensure that you are eligibile to register for ACES.

You are eligible if:

  • attend S4, S5 or S6 at a state secondary school in Edinburgh, the Lothians, the Scottish Borders, Falkirk, Stirling or Clackmannanshire, and are interested in studying art, design or architecture
  • AND you fulfil one or more of the eligibility criteria listed below 
    • live in a postcode area within the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation lowest 20% (SIMD20/Quintile 1/) or 40% (SIMD40/Quintile 2)
    • care experienced
    • estranged
    • young carer
    • refugee or asylum seeker
    • entitled to Free School Meals (FSM)
    • entitled to Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
    • live in a low-income household
    • live in an area considered to be remote and/or rural
    • are facing educational disadvantages due to challenging circumstances

Once we have processed your registration and confirmed your eligibility, we will send you a welcome email with further information about ACES. Please note that it can take up to 5 working  days for us to process your registration.

Please note that we always contact you via email about ACES activities, so a valid email address that you have regular access to is essential.

Why do we ask these questions?

ACES is for eligible young people and we need to know how you meet our eligibility criteria to join us. We also want to make sure you get the support you need and receive individual university admissions advice .

Do you have any individual requirements (mobility, accessibility, dietary etc) or additional support needs? This section does not need to be completed to allow you to attend our event(s). However, it will enable us to support you to participate fully in our programme and to ensure that all relevant adjustments are in place.
We define care experience as any time spent in care at any stage of your life. Care may have been provided in one of many different settings, such as if you were: in residential care / foster care / kinship care / looked after at home with a supervision .requirement
Are you estranged from your family? Estranged young people are usually over 16 years old and without the financial or emotional support of their family due to a breakdown in the relationship.
Are you a young carer? We define a Young Carer as a young person who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member. This means caring for someone, who due to illness, disability, mental health issues, or an addiction, cannot cope without your support.
Are you a refugee or asylum seeker?
Are you entitled to / in receipt of Free School Meals (FSM)?*
Are you eligible to receive Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)?*
Does the household you live in receive state benefits?
Do you experience challenging circumstances that have impacted on your learning? Examples of challenging circumstances impacting on your learning may include disability, mental ill health, lack of educational opportunities within relevant subject areas, sexual or gender identity, bereavement, or ethnic minority. This is not a definitive list. If you're not eligible to join ACES based on any other criteria, we will be in touch with you and a member of staff from your school will need to email us a brief description of your situation. This will then be reviewed by the Access to High Demand Professions team on a case-by-case basis.

If you attend a school in another area, please contact your local ACES provider (University of Dundee, Glasgow School of Art, Robert Gordon University).

ACES data protection statement

By registering to join ACES you understand and accept the following terms and conditions with regards to the use of your data:

  1. ACES will retain the details you have submitted on their database, as well as any future correspondence and details of ACES events that you attend.
  2. ACES staff will use the personal contact details you have provided to contact you with information about the project and related events. External (non University of Edinburgh) workshop providers will only be provided with your contact details / emergency contact details for emergency purposes for the workshop(s) that they provide, in the absence of ACES staff.
  3. Your data will be retained for a maximum of seven years and may be used for the purposes of monitoring and tracking.
  4. ACES may liaise with other departments within the University of Edinburgh - and other universities that you may apply to, where appropriate - about any future application you make and may share details of ACES events you have attended.
  5. Your school may be made aware that you have registered with ACES and we may liaise with them to support your engagement with ACES and the development of your application. We may also confirm your participation in the project with other universities that you apply to. 
  6. Your personal data will not be shared with anyone out with the University of Edinburgh other than outlined in point 2 and 5 above.
